Chairs continue the color scheme of the room with dark wood and neutral tan seats. The island is large enough to offer plenty of space for cooking prep and double as a breakfast bar for three. Beige walls accent the dark cabinets and the granite countertop well.

Sleek stainless steel appliances add a touch of modern to this warm, contemporary room. The island chairs, in a distressed golden color, stand apart from the rest of the room with their unique hue. The white cushions are highlighted by the white dishes and vases around the room.

Simple white chairs fit the sleek modern design of this kitchen. High-gloss white cabinets and countertops allow for the solid black accents and sparse uses of natural wood to stand out even more from the rest of the room. Stainless steel accents throughout the room bring sophistication to this design.

Dark stain on the wood of the chairs and table help it to stand out against the backdrop of the natural wood cabinets. This color is broken up by pale, sage green walls and the inclusion of plant life to highlight the use of green even more. A tile backsplash picks out different hues found in the granite countertop.

Traditional kitchen design with dark brown cabinets is offset by a slightly paler brown floor while the off-white tile backsplash is complemented by the rough woven chairs standing attention at the island. Bright green accents are used around the room to bring in a pop of color to the otherwise dark space.

Soft, buttery yellow cabinets set the base for this room. China blue accents, especially in the tiled image in the backsplash, are highlighted by the yellow nicely. Metallic accents bring color and class into the kitchen to complement the warm wood of the island countertop.

Stately leather chairs add class and color to this bright white kitchen while dark granite counters break up the use of white cabinets. Stainless steel appliances also help to break up the white and bring a bit of a modern look to this contemporary style.

To balance the creamy, off-white cabinets, a dark wood island and even darker chairs were introduced to the room. This design element helps to ground the space and keep it from feeling too bright while also offering visual interest in a drastic change in colors.

Bright is the name of the game in this room. Bright cabinets, bright walls, bright accents, even the floor is a bright honey-colored wood. Black chair legs help to break up the brightness and tie together the black accents in the appliances without feeling harsh in the space. The gorgeous copper lanterns accomplish the same goal by breaking up space at the top of the room. The above island includes a stove.

Pale counters, floors, and tile backsplash balance out the dark wood used throughout this kitchen. Bold textures offset the sleek, structured look of the cabinets and chairs. The introduction of greenery on the counter brings life and a splash of color into space.

White and pale gray create this space, broken up only by accents of gold and green; until you get to the dark, exposed beams on the ceiling of the room. The kitchen itself flourishes with the addition of the rough stone backsplash bringing in color, though neutral, that stands out against the light hues of the rest of the room.

Bold red cabinetry is balanced by creamy counters and floors. The chairs highlight the stainless steel of the appliances with their simple silver frames. Little splashes of color are introduced into the room through plants and flowers – which help to liven up space.

Bright turquoise cushions draw the eye and complement the brilliant golden hue of the wood counter in the kitchen. The speckled gray of the counter facing creates a neutral but complementary color choice to the exposed concrete of the pillar to the left and on the floor.

Bold blue tiles are enough to brighten up this space, so much so that the rest of the design can remain natural wood hues and white cabinetry. Separating the island cook space from the eating space of the counter is a genius idea and it allows the individual spaces to remain uncluttered. The above island is interesting because the sink takes up much of the island counter space. It’s a good example of a smaller island (although not as small as getting a mobile cart on wheeels).

Shades of tan and brown do a great job of breaking up this space while remaining in the same color family to keep the neutral tone the design was going for. Alternating colors like the pale floor, tan cabinets, pale backsplash, and so on keep anyone hue from dominating the room. The dark brown is kept to the floor and ceiling, effectively framing the space with its dark lines.

A balance of light and dark is important in narrow spaces like this. The kitchen workspace is kept to a single aisle surrounded by dark cabinets but effectively balanced by the creamy countertops and matching tile backsplash. The red chairs bring a fun hint of color to the room.

Color is a key component in this kitchen design. Navy blue cabinets are complemented by the frosted blue glass of the accent wall. The natural wood counter tops break up the dark colors of the room and more pops of color are added in the leather accent chairs placed around the end of the island.

However, your options for seating at an island are many. Just take a look at the 32 pictures above and you’ll see all kinds of eating and seating arrangements.

The following is a list of options to consider for island designs incorporating eating and places to sit.

The overhang: The overhang is where the island counter extends beyond the island base to create a space for dining.

The 2-tier: The 2-tier island is an elevated island breakfast bar that accommodates stools. Often the elevated layer extends beyond the island base for legroom.

The indent: Some islands create legroom for dining by using a partial base or indented base.

The end table: The end table island is ideal for narrow kitchens. Chairs or stools can simply be added to the end of the island or if you wish to get more elaborate, you can add a table (lowered or elevated) to the end of the island.

2-sided eating: You’ll notice some islands above have seating on 2 sides of the island. This is a great way to accommodate several people. However, having chairs or stools on both sides does encroach on island workspace.

The sunken table: In order to accommodate regular chairs instead of stools or elevated bar chairs, islands are built with a lower top along one side and/or the end.

The 2 island kitchen: Believe it or not, some high-end kitchens have 2 islands… one dedicated as a workspace and another dedicated to eating space.

The second component to kitchen island dining area the seats themselves. You have 2 options:

Bar stools (backless): This is the simplest form of chair. They’re also the least comfortable. They’re great for quick meals at the counter such as breakfast.

Bar chairs (substantial stools with backs): These are elevated chairs with backs. Often they’re cushioned as well. They’re far more comfortable than stools.

Regular dining chairs: Some islands have lower eating sections to accommodate regular height dining chairs. This turns an island into a bona fide dining table suitable for dinners.
