It’s Air Quality Awareness Week , an annual campaign to educate Americans on the importance of (you guessed it) air quality awareness. Now through May 7, a powerhouse coalition of government entities — the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Weather Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Department of State — is on a mission to impart this year’s theme: “Healthy Air – Important for Everyone.” With people spending more time indoors than ever before, air quality is something that has been a top priority over the last year. While many have invested in air purifiers and upped their dusting game, if you’re looking for even more ways to improve the air quality in your home, we’ve got your back. In honor of AQAW, we rounded up eight of our favorite products designed to help you and your loved ones stay healthy at home.
The first step to improving your air quality is to monitor it. How? With the Awair Indoor Air Quality Monitor . "Air quality was something I cared about, but it was also challenging to visualize," shares lifestyle director Taryn. "I like that Awair lets me monitor what’s happening in the air at home. It also helps me wield my tools better. Instead of running a dehumidifier around the clock, I can run it when the humidity gets too high. And the connected smart home aspect is great, too. I have it synched so my Nest automatically runs the fan when concentrations of dust or CO2 rise."
Now that you know what's going on indoors, it's time to circulate and clean that air with an air purifier. The Conway Mighty Air Purifier is at the top of our Best List . Equipped with a true four-stage HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filtration system, which means it can trap up to 99.97 percent of airborne particles, this machine is suited for all your purifying needs, from getting rid of odors and smoke to removing dust and allergens in the air.
When's the last time you cleaned your ceiling fan? How about the tops of your cabinets? The molding around your door frame? These hard-to-reach and often forgotten spots can become a haven for dust collection, which is no help to the air quality in your home. To take care of this issue, we love a good extendable duster, like this one from OXO . It has a reach of 53 inches and comes with a reusable (read: environmentally friendly) microfiber dust pad.
Keeping your home clean is the first step to keeping your air clean, and that's virtually impossible to do without a great vacuum. One of the newer releases from Dyson, the V15 Detect is designed to rid your space of as much dust as possible thanks to its laser detecting technology. An integrated green laser finds dust that can't be seen with the naked eye, resulting in a deeper clean. A fancy sensor on its LCD screen tells you (in real time) just how much dust and dirt it's picking up, confirming a job well done.
No air-purifying list would be complete without at least one charcoal-based product. Long used in filters to purify water, charcoal is also known for its air-purifying and moisture-absorbing properties. One-hundred percent fragrance and chemical free, Moso Bags naturally combat indoor air pollutants and last up to two years, making them a worthwhile (and affordable) investment.
Whether it's due to something like a leak or flood, or merely because of the change of season, moisture is one of the leading causes of poor air quality in homes. It's also a major trigger for health issues like allergies and asthma. To help, the EPA recommends investing in a dehumidifier. Covering areas up to 1500 square feet, this option from hOmelabs is an Amazon favorite and great for spaces big and small.
Pet dander is a top allergen that can contribute to poor air quality at home. If you live with any furry friends, invest in a good grooming brush, like the Pet Neat Brush . Removing up to 95 percent of dead hair and tangles from your pet, this durable brush is a simple way to take care of both your health and your pet.
The easiest way to keep outdoor allergens and spores from entering your home? Don't track them into the house in the first place. By keeping a shoe rack in your entryway (we like this stylish, wooden one from Wayfair ), you can keep outdoor dirt and germs contained to one spot, thus keeping your air quality stable.
