Home improvement reached a fever pitch last year amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. When you’re confined in your home for months ( and months and months! ) on end, DIY projects become the logical solution. U.K.-based online DIY retailer My Tool Shed recently released a report on some of the most popular home improvement trends of 2020. With data gathered from Google Trends and Search Metrics, the company narrowed down three major themes last year: Kitchen updates, DIY searches, and paint trends.
For more in-depth statistics on the search trends—compiled between November 2019 and November 2020—read on below. Perhaps these home improvement trends will inspire your 2021 DIY and renovation goals, too. With the pandemic still very much raging on, home improvement and DIY projects will no doubt still be big this year.
Updated Kitchens
Compared to searches for bathroom, bedroom, garage, and loft extensions, the search for kitchen extensions experienced a 43% search increase by May of last year. Kitchen paint, for example, was one of the top searches throughout much of last year. Living rooms, on the other hand, remained the lowest searched room, revealing a preference for the room that we all collectively spent more time baking bread and whipping Dalgona coffee in.
DIY and How-To Searches
DIY and how-to searches skyrocketed in April. More specifically, DIY searches jumped from 235.4K to 347.8K, resulting in an increase of 48%. The biggest search increase was “How to Paint,” which experienced a 44% increase in searches. “How to Build” eventually overtook the searches in July and August. “How to Fix” was also a top search item.
Paint, Paint, and More Paint
A fresh coat of paint can transform just about any project, so it makes sense that paint experienced a 77% increase in searches last year. As mentioned above, kitchen paint was a top search last year—followed by bedroom paint (80% search increase) and bathroom paint (17% search increase). According to My Tool Shed, fence paint experienced a 196% search increase in March—soaring over searches for ceiling paint, wall paint, and door paint.
