It’s no secret that the fields of fashion and interior design are closely linked, often borrowing inspiration from each other and adopting similar trends. However, the two industries follow different schedules: fashion is able to move a little faster, creating new collections and generating trends multiple times per year, while interior design moves at a steadier pace (after all, who wants to or could afford to redesign their home a couple times per year?). It’s certainly not a one-way street, but this dynamic often means that the patterns we see on the runways may just end up in our living rooms six months to a year later. Here’s a look at five of the hottest home trends of summer 2016 and the fashion trends that predicted them.
Tropical Prints
Summer 2016 has truly been the time of the tropical print, and last fall’s fashion shows called it. The look above from Paul & Joe’s Spring 2016 RTW collection, captured by Vogue , gave us a glimpse into the palm-frond-patterned future. Now, interiors like the blush pink and leaf-adorned one above by Studiopepe are showing up all over. Bad news for those who are tired of the trend: Vogue predicts that the banana leaves and birds-of-paradise patterns are going to carry over into the fall.
Blush Pink and Soft Blue
Pantone’s 2016 colors popped up on the runways late last year, like in the look above from Vionnet’s Spring 2016 show, found on Vogue . Now the soft pastel washes are coloring home decor, including the pile of pillows above from H&M Home .
Indigo-Dyed
Vogue posted this shibori-style outfit from Issa’s Spring 2016 show, forecasting the tie-dye trends that would hit the home decor and DIY scenes this spring and summer. Urban Outfitter’ s shibori-dyed tapestries (they cost less than $30!) are an affordable way to introduce the trend into your room—and you can easily switch it out the next time fashion week rolls around.
Dark Florals
During Spring 2016 fashion week, Calvin Klein debuted the floral look above, snapped by Gianni Pucci and found via Vogue . This spring and summer, floral designs on dark backgrounds have been blooming on couches, pillows, and duvet covers. Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere ‘s powder room, wallpapered with one of Ellie Cashman ‘s gorgeous designs, captures the look beautifully.
Black-and-White Geometrics
This trend—which was spotted at multiple designer’s shows during fall 2015, including at Valentino’s, found via Vogue —seems to have taken a little longer to cross over into home decor. This summer, black and white is looking far from neutral in bold patterns that are showing up on everything from textiles to tiles, like the ones shown above in a bathroom from Desire to Inspire .
